This restoration program offers instruction in restoring an old canoe to its previous splendor. Each student may bring their own canoe, or one will be provided. The instructor will assess each canoe and students will proceed to restore or replace the needed parts. By end of the week the canoe will be re-canvassed and ready to take home for the finishing work. The instructor must have a prior conversation with the canoe owner to determine the materials needed and the feasibility of restoration in the allotted time. If a canoe is provided by Sagamore for restoration, it will remain as part of the Sagamore fleet for use in their educational programs. (Minimum two boats)

Sagamore is able to offer you the rare privilege of staying and learning in a National Historic Landmark. As a guest at Sagamore, you will be accommodated in our authentic historic buildings in (mostly) double occupancy rooms with twin beds and bathrooms in the hallways. Our chef will carefully prepare buffet meals served in our paneled dining room with splendid views of Sagamore Lake. In addition to instruction, you will be invited to enjoy our 20 miles of hiking trails, canoeing, and tennis as options during your scheduled program. There are no telephones in rooms and no TV, so your relaxation is assured. For a few short days, live in a camp community enjoying the natural beauty of the Adirondacks. Expect astonishing views of the stars, the scent of balsam in the air, campfires, and crystal-clear drinking water. Sagamore is not a hotel, motel, or resort. It is instead, a complete experience in learning and living a “bit of history” in an incomparable setting. Sagamore Institute is a non-profit organization that operates this National Historic Landmark.

In this partner’s course, you will build your own cedar canvas canoe, using techniques and tools from the 1800’s. On the first day white cedar ribs will be steam bent over a form. Thin cedar planking will then be shaped and hand tacked to the ribs. Once off the form, planking is finished, decks are installed and the wooden shell is covered with tightly stretched cotton canvas. The canvas is then filled, and seats, thwarts, yoke and stembands are installed. In our “spare time” we will learn to hand cane the seats as well as painting and varnishing techniques and tool sharpening.

The canoe will be structurally complete by the end of the course, ready for varnishing and painting, to be done by the student at home. The completed canoe will weigh 55-60 lb, with the option of a Dacron covering instead of canvas for an additional saving of 5+lb.

This is a demanding course in terms of time commitment, and is therefore only offered as a partner’s or pair’s course. Two people are needed in order to complete the work in the time allotted. Prior woodworking experience is not needed, just a willingness to learn. Maximum 2 canoes per course.
