Coyotes use both their nose and eyes to hunt. The cottontail is the coyote’s main meal and they eat more fruit than other canines. You can use either a .222 center fire or a .22 bolt action varmint gun for these animals.

The canine is so sharp eyed he can spot the slightest movement from a great distance and will change direction at the slightest hint of change in his territory. Also they are vocal, often responding to a family member.

No other animal in America lengthened its range despite man’s intervention: or because of it. With the loss of the large predators like the cougar the need for a big game predator became obvious to coyote. They will take advantage of the old, weak, and sick deer. The population of the coyote is controlled by the food and habitat available and can survive close to man.

One place that is always productive is on higher ground. The coyote will always try to stay on higher ground so he can see his enemies and prey. Usually from a distance he can be spotted loping along his hunting route that if not bothered doesn’t change.

Check your Hunting and Trapping guide for the coyote hunting dates. Also check the fur bearer section for pelt tagging requirements.

The RUFFED GROUSE, a 17 to 20 inch bird with 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 blunt tail weighs about 1/4 pound dressed out. GROUSE hinting is challenging, frustrating but always exciting. Upon being flushed a 100 to 150 yard flight is normal. Should you miss your first shot you may have a chance again by following the bird.

Wintertime GROUSE prefer stands of pine, aspen or maple saplings for safety. Also they like grape and blueberry thickets. GROUSE drink twice a day, after each meal, morning and evening and edge oiented so loook for forest roads and small woods openings.

The gun for you is one you are most comfortable using. Fred like a 20 gauge withh #6 or #7 1/2 high brass factory shell with a 1/2 ounce load. This is sufficient fire power for GROUSE hunting.

Robert Bateman says, “The RUFFED GROUSE is one of the best known birds in North America. It is well loved by sportsmen and naturalists. Yhe deep drumming in the spring, the whirr of his wings in the fall strikes a responsive call to all who love the outdoors. The male is built for display. His tail can be straight as a stick or fan fuller than a semi- circle. His neck ruff can lay flat or spread wide in a black circle.”

In the woods “Ole Bushy Tail” will play hide and seek; him hiding you seeking. He always keeps a limb or trunk of a tree between you and him. He can be spotted in early morning and late afternoon.

Where are the SQUIRRELS? In nut rich woods. M.D. Johnson says, “Memorize this: buckeye, beach, black walnut in the bottoms, hickory half way up and oaks on top.” Look for stumps with shucks around them. Their sense of hearing and sight are excellent so the SQUIRRELS can eat and watch for their enemies simultaneously.

Quietly the hunter, having the patience of a school teacher and>the ability to see and hear the rusrle in the tree tops- waits. Remaining still, the hunter scans the tree tops for their leaf nest or tree cavity that is three to four inches wide so predetors can’t enter.

On this windless day when the SQUIRREL is most active and the birds are chirping their good morning, the hunter robs two coins together simulating the sound of squirrels eating. This assures other SQUIRRELS; all is well in the area.

As he waits for the chatter the hunter moves only his eyes and spots a SQUIRREL about 35 yards away. With his .22 long rifle that he hunted with since childhood, using solid bullets he places the shot at a target the size of a tennis ball. The hunter bags the animal and waits for the next SQUIRREL.

TIP- Check your New York State Small Game trap and hunt regulations.

For the die hard hunter there still is some small game that be bagged. That is the common Crow until April 15, 1996. There is an extended hunting season with liberal hunting regulations. Hiding in a hedge row between two fields on Fridays, Sundays or Mondays, two hunters are calling or using an amplified calling device. Sound or imitation calls can be used and there is no daily or season limit. These are the only migratory bird that can be hunted with a rifle. A .22 long or .222 rifle with a scope is sufficient. Also a shotgun with a modified choke and 7 1/2, 8, or 9 shot are used.

Once the crow comes into sight… wait, patience, wait. Soon others will appear cawing, circling and looking for the enemy to battle. At this time they have a “devil may care” attitude and it is the time to start hunting. The “watch dog of the forest” is named because of his excellent hearing, eyesight and posting a sentry next to their roost. With some hunting preserves open until the end of March a call to your local DEC office will provide you with information about crow hunting. The crow is a scavenger and predator and except at mating time they are always in flocks. At maturity he is black all over.

Some farmers feel that crows are harmful to their crops so ask them for hunting permission. Be challenged this winter, go crow hunting and prepare the meat like chicken.

Safety comes first. Hunting is enjoyable but if you are not safe in hunting then it makes trouble for the hunter. Before you start hunting you could take hunting safety course. It’s make your make hunting safe enjoyable and memorable.

Always carry the gun pointing towards the ground or into the sky, never in the direction of colleagues or dogs. For the seats, not pointing to anyone.

Keep this practice as it catches alone. The weapons can even shoot half-cocked.

Do not have your finger near the trigger, it is preferable to always go with the safety on and only remove it when shooting.

Kick cartridges or bullets before crossing any obstacles (streams, fences, fences, stone walls).

Never put the muzzle of the gun on the floor, or allow it to enter into it any foreign object. Check your state before going hunting.

Always use the cartridge and the pellet suitable for different forms of hunting and shotguns. Must know the pressure that supports the gun and building on the cartridge. Keep this in mind in the bullet cartridges, pod length checking and making sure the state of his gun and the pressures it can withstand. In the case of rifles, bullets and calibers use appropriate and never place a bullet from a caliber in the bedroom of a different caliber gun.

If the weapon has changeable chokes, check during the day of hunting has not loosened. The inmates, if loose, leaving a small gap, enough to hold the pellets.

Avoid the sun or ammunition to any agent that can cause overheating and a rise in pressure can be very dangerous.

When you fire on a smaller or larger part must always have it at the hearing, with sufficient visibility in the way we do not find people, animals or obstacles in which we hit.

Never brush fire on the simple fact that they move, much less to noise or tarameo. Do not forget that behind can be a person (other hunter, Rehalero, whisk, guards, walkers …) When in doubt, do not shoot. Prevention is always better. Do not be blinded to the response after that may be dogs or people.

If you go to the auction of a wound response or a grip, it warns the other hunters in adjacent positions and do it with a knife, do not shoot because it can injure or kill a dog. Upon hearing the shot the dogs would run away scared, leaving free the prey and causing an accident. Moreover, at other times will drop when they see the hounds reach unfamiliar with the danger in case of injured pigs. If you will not get a knife, do expect an experienced person.

Do not use the gun to move plants. Is designed and made to fire only and does not rely on the shotgun or rifle to rise or overcome any obstacle.

In the game in hand, knows the status of their peers. Caution with other gangs that cross with us. Extreme caution in the mountain areas or thick vegetation. Think of your dog or those of their peers at the time of shooting. Not if he is not convinced that the bullets will not reach.

In the fixed, come to them with weapons sheathed and out equally. Do not move with the loaded gun from the posts and leave to charge with the shotgun in his hand.

In beatings, be sure to attach the side screens. Do not shoot towards the other posts or to the scouts when they are at a distance that they can reach. And do not go out with loaded shotguns and shoot once given the signal end of the leaf through. Take your weapons sheathed and placed at the end, too.

In hunting positions, mark its position with respect to the other hunters. Draw an imaginary line and trigger in the direction of the other posts. Check your firing zone and even reduce it if possible rebounds.

The possibility of rebounding is something that we must always keep in mind. If we throw to the ground, in areas of rock or water, the shells can bounce at a surprising rate, reaching someone.

Do not rely on distances, and the leads of the cartridges and bullets can all reach distances do not think. For example, the scope is very large rifles, bullets can reach several kilometers.

Do not ever shoot into the appearances, changes of grade and over other hunters.

At the end of the day look that leaves no cartridge or bullet in the gun.

If you drink or take substances that can cause euphoria or loss of normal conditions, do not go hunting.

Tennessee hunting will be in the Tellico Ranger District which is one of the most popular big game hunting areas in the state.

For those individuals who wish to rent a cabin, there are many cabin rentals available near the Cherokee National Forest. Two bedroom cabins typically rent for approximately $250/month and reservations are recommended. Weekend rentals are available. There are several campgrounds nearby but hunt site camping is available at no cost.

In order to keep the cost at a minimal it is recommended that all hunters provide for their own meals. However, breakfast, lunch and dinner can be provided as part of the service for a cost of $20 per day per person. Breakfast menus would include bacon, sausage, or country ham, eggs, grits, coffee or milk and homemade buttermilk biscuits and gravy. Lunch would include a sandwich, chips, a snack, and drink. Dinners would typically be one meat, two vegetables, cobbler, rolls and drink. Snacks can be provided for those who want to take extra into the field. Snacks would consist of a sweet roll and/or candy bar, chips, and soda.

Individuals will be responsible for their own gear and hunting licenses. If you need to buy any gear there are several local businesses who can furnish most anything you need. Licenses can be purchased locally. Annual licenses and permits are valid from March 1, 1996 through the last day of February, 1997. Please note that wild turkey is classified as a big game animal. A Tennessee and/or North Carolina Hunting/Fishing Regulations brochure can be mailed to you upon request.

If you do not have dogs and wish to hunt with dogs (advisable for wild boar and black bear), guide service can provide experienced hunting dogs. Please advise guide in advance if you require the use of dogs

Fishing
Guide service can provide trout fishing in some wild streams as well as the Tellico River. The Tellico River is one of the most popular trout fishing area in the state of Tennessee. Lake fishing for bass, crappie, and cat fish is available at Appalachia Lake or Hiwasee Lake in Southwestern North Carolina. White bass fishing at best from June until August. Other species included in the area are rainbow and brown trout, large mouth and small mouth bass, blue, yellow and channel catfish, sunfish and bluegill. Guide will provide boat only. Day or night fishing available. Guide doesn’t furnish fishing equipment, bait or food.

Hiking/Camping
Hiking guide service is available for the Tellico Ranger District which consists of 123,372 acres. Elevation in the Tellico Ranger District ranges from 900 feet near Tellico Plains to 5,472 feet in the Haw Knob. There are 9 developed campgrounds and numerous undeveloped areas available for camping and hiking. Campsites are on a first come, first serve basis. Camping along the Tellico River and North River is allowed in designated areas only. Camping in the forest is permitted unless otherwise posted. Hunt Mt. Lions in rugged Central Arizona when it fits your schedule. The season here runs year around with the best time to hunt being October through April. Unlike many other states that offer lion hunting you don’t have to sit at home waiting for it to snow and than hoping you can get time offwork to go. Nor do you need to get drawn for a permit.

These lion hunts are a fair chase western adventure. No sitting in a motel waiting for some guide and his partners to find a track crossing a road in the snow. You will be riding mules or horses watching some cold nosed hounds working hard, to hopefully cut and then finish a lion track for you. It is very possible that a lion hunt can turn into the most physical hunt you’ve had, often 8-12 hrs. of riding and walking ,be ready for some fun. Nights are spent in houses, tents or travel trailers. Dave will surely entertain you with a tale or two of his years of mountain lion hunting.

Rifle, archery, or muzzleloader hunts are available, as well as photography and video expeditions for those who prefer not to harvest a lion. Hunts are conducted throughout the year, mostly in Central Arizona, in all weather! You must be in good shape; there will be some walking, and days may run eight to twelve hours. Bring your bedroll, hunting licenses and hunting tags–we furnish everything else.

Wildcatters and cartridge tinkerers seem never to be satisfied with the performance of factory built ammunition thinking they can always do better. In some cases they can, as is the case in many of P. O. Ackley’s designs; however, often their efforts go unrewarded because only marginal performance increases are attained.

Imagine our surprise when we discovered that by making some changes to the 300 Weatherby case design which increased the case capacity by 3.5%, we gained 26% in energy! Now we had 300 Weatherby or 300 H&H muzzle energy and velocity almost 200 yards or 350 yards respectively downrange using 180 grain bullets! This realization prompted a patent application in the spring. The table below illustrates the ballistic comparisons of the 300 Coby Ultra Magnum vs the 300 Weatherby or 300 H & H with 180 grain bullets:

The idea for the new cartridge design was hatched last summer at our rifle range in the Adirondack mountains when my Dad, brother, and I were discussing what changes we could make to the basic Holland & Holland designed belted magnum case which dates back to the early part of this century. We created the design which maximizes the case capacity of the H & H case, but it also has some attendant benefits as well. In a pinch, one can fire factory 300 Weatherby or 300 H & H cartridges in the Coby chamber and, because of the minimum body taper and relatively sharp shoulder angle of the Coby Ultra Magnum, not only is case stretching greatly reduced, but also a strange thing happens: Velocity jumps geometrically probably induced by the swirl effects of the expanding gasses caused by the sharp shoulder angle and shortened neck though it is impossible to know definitively without doing flow tests on the case design.

In following up on our idea, the first thing to do was to order a reamer from Dave Manson at Clymer (810 853-5555) who very rapidly delivered the piece to us. We then enlisted Jim Kobe at Jim’s Gun Shop in Bloomfield, MN (612 884-6031) to cut some chambers for us. Jim did a superb job which is no surprise since he does a lot of work for John Krieger of barrel fame. (Jim has a reamer and can provide others with this chambering if so desired.) We then received loading dies from Fred Huntington at Huntington’s in Oroville, CA (916 534-1210), and soon we were at the range chronographing and accuracy testing the new cartridge. Our suspicions were soon borne out by the astounding velocities we were getting on our Oehler 35P while showing normal pressure signs.

A number of powders were tried and some interesting discoveries were made. IMR 7828, Reloder 19, Reloder 22, Norma MRP, and Hodgdon 4831 were chosen, and Reloder 19 seemed to give the best pressure/velocity combination. Surprisingly, it seemed to show less pressure than Reloder 22 even though 19 is a faster burner.

The table below shows the results we obtained during our test sessions. Of course, these loads reflect our particular experiences with our test rifles, and the handloader is urged to approach maximum loads with caution by reducing starting loads by at least 5% and working up charges while looking for pressure signs.

Having determined our optimal loads, we decided to give the cartridge a field test in Africa. African game is known for its toughness and ability to cling to life. Well, the wound channels and sheer destruction of tissue by this cartridge soon dispelled that notion. For example, when I shot a reedbuck, we found meat, bone and hair hanging from neighboring trees when using a 180 grain Barnes X bullet. A total of six animals were killed using the 300 Coby Ultra Magnum, and not one of them required a second shot. Ranges were from 121 yards to 386 yards as measured by a Leica Geovid BA. For hunters or target shooters wishing long range performance, the 300 Coby Ultra Magnum would seem a logical choice.
