These cousins of the trout typically mature to 13 ounces, though the Alaska state record tips the scales at 4 pounds higher. They are easily fished from May to September and have a reputation for hitting just about anything, bait, lures or flies. The BLM recommends ten spots along the highway for grayling: Ten Mile Lake (mile 10), Tangle Lakes (mile 23), Landmark Gap Lake (mile 25), Rock Creek (mile 25), Fiftymile Lake (mile 50), Glacier Lake (mile 31), Sevenmile Lake (mile 40), Crooked Creek (mile 47), and Brushkana Creek ( mile 105).

Ten Mile, Tangle, Landmark Gap, Glacier and Sevenmile Lakes, along with Big and Little Swede Lakes at mile 25, also have lake trout. Burbot, a freshwater cod with a whisker-like barbel at the tip of the chin, are found in Ten Mile, Tangle and Big Swede. Mature Burbot in Alaska range from 18 to 45 inches and from 1 to 18 pounds. The Alaskan record is a monster 24 pounder.

Check with the Alaska Fish and Game for licensing requirements and bait and limit restrictions. And, when possible, practice catch and release.

An ultra-light rig, bobber and a jig tipped with a perch minnow hooked under the dorsal fin will bring crappie to the net. Where do we fish? Look for the locals on any body of water and they will be anchored over Crappie heaven.

An angler lobs his baited jig next to a submerged rock near the outside of a weedline. The bobber disappears, Tom sets the hook and a one pound Crappie dances at the end of his line. Time to bait the hook again. Two dozen minnows are not to many for four hours of Spring Crappie angling. My partner Tom and I do this every spring at Chautauqua Lake with my fishing club.

Usually not living more than 6 years this member of the sunfish family can be caught in water from 3 to 15 feet deep, depending on the clarity of the water. When spawning conditions are suitable and there is ample food supply a large brood of fish will survive. The Black Crappie matures in its second year and a 1/2 pound Crappie can lay 20,000 to 50,000 eggs.

The young feed on plankton and insects while a high protein minnow diet is essential for slab Crappie. The waters in the northeast have a healthy minnow population; therefore healthy Black Crappie. The result is big fish and plenty of them. Crappie can be aggressive, battle well and taste good. What more can an angler ask for?

This tradition has been passed down through time until today, in fact, even now many families still have a house and a city in the country.

Today, many are rented villas in Tuscany vacation from their proprietari.Talvolta be rented entirely, which makes them particularly suitable for families and large groups, but are often divided into several smaller apartments, also suitable for couples or smaller families.

Some historic Tuscan villas also have been turned into hotels, Sicily villas or bed and breakfast from the ‘family atmosphere, where guests can feel at ease, like visiting the house of a dear friend.

A little ‘history …

In the Middle Ages there were frequent clashes between opposing factions and political upheavals in the cities and on these occasions families prudently took refuge in their country estates.

The villas in Tuscany were built away from the villages and had no military function, so the houses themselves did not need any special defenses as needed instead of the castles or fortresses. So the traditional look of a fortress, with towers, thick walls and small windows was mitigated by the ‘addition of decorative details, approaching to simply plastered walls, arches and courtyards with well. The architecture of these castles became an example to copy and develop and the result can be seen clearly in appearance and elegant classical villas that have taken over time in Tuscany and then throughout Italy.

The fish dances while being played to the net. Steelheads like fast water over 42 degrees with a preference of 55 to 65 degrees. In lakes they are silvery with a dark back, white stomach and a pinkish lateral line. During the spawn the male develops a hooked jaw. Rainbow and Steelhead trout are different strains of the same species of fish and not natives. They are Pacific Coast stock and tend to longer and more streamlined.

Lake Ontario Fishing Regulations

Treat Steelheads like rainbows. Steelheads are rainbows that moved to a large body of water at an early age, grew and returned to spawn. Steelhead feed on smelt and alewife and can weigh over 20 pounds in Lake Ontario.

Angeling Methods – drift fishing from shore, casting, drifting by boat and trolling.

GEAR

ROD- Your choice.

LINE- Use superior 6 to 8 pound test line with 2 to 6 pound leader.

HOOKS- Short shanked hooks matched to the size of your bait.

LIVE BAIT- Fish spawn in egg sacks or single eggs. In some area worms and

wigglers are productive.

ARTIFICIALS- Small spinners. When casting use spoons, wiggling plugs and minnow emulating lures. Flat lining, running planer boards and down riggers will bring fish to the net.

Soon Steelheads will be staging at the mouth of streams and rivers for the spawning cycle.

WHY- Safety and companionship. Trouble comes your way you have help, catching fish you have someone to share the experience. Ice is beauty and violence. Lives are lost each year for not knowing the thickness of the ice. Check the thickness of the ice often. One inch- not safe, two inches- like playing Russian Roulette, three inches- okay maybe near shore, four inches- okay; no vehicles and six inches or more- vehicles okay.

A sled, an auger with a screw type head or motorized, food strainer and a plastic pail for bait and sitting. Also a portable depth finder, tip- ups and jigging poles with 4 pound test line. Choose you place to fish the same as in summer: docks, weedline and drop offs. Use your summer time map and core your hole; one by the weedline, inside the weed edge and one farther out.

LURES A tiny tear drop spoon tipped with a wax worm or minnow. A white or yellow jig tipped with a wax worm or minnow will put fish in the bucket. Jig either lure every minute or two. Keep your bait moving.

TIP Use Four to six pound test line with a small slip sinker and steel leader when fishing for pike or pickerel. Large minnows are the bait of choice. By now you are set for visiting until someone hollers, “Flag Up.”

TIP OF THE WEEK When ice fishing deep lakes the warmest water is at the bottom – good for trout.

Perch are caught to be eaten. Study their habits, learn what they bite on and the equipment to be used. If I were just starting to angle for perch before the water warms to 40 degrees, I would look on the outside of a weedline in about 10 to 20 feet of water. Another trick is to watch the sky for swooping shorebirds feeding over the water. Below are schools of perch feeding on shad or other baitfish. Perch heaven.

When the water temperature is between 40 and 50 degrees, the fish move into low spots in a bay or lake in the low areas. Once the water temperature goes above 50 degrees, the perch move back to the deeper water. Despite the season perch will hit on worms, minnows, or small yellow or white jigs tipped with either a worm or minnow.

When you feel the tap- tap of a strike set the hook hard, and use a steady retrieve to the net. In the spring perch will hit on a small spinner or small crank baits. Remember, perch are a schooling fish by age, so if you catch one fish you should catch a bucket full. I like an ultra-lite rod and reel, 4 to 6 pound test line, a # 10 hook, and a split shot. Once prepared, lower your line to the bottom and then raise it about 12 to 18 inches from the bottom. You are now in perch catching territory and remember perch are caught to eat so only take enough for dinner.

Something of an institution among bonefishers. Deep Water Cay first opened in 1958 and attracts anglers from all over the world. Deep Water Cay is a private island just off the eastern end of Grand Bahama, and it is both a haven and an open secret in the angling world. With room for only 22 guests. the club feels both friendly and exclusive, with the guest list reading like a “who’s who” of discerning anglers. Paul and Alison Adams, managing partners of Deep Water Cay, have over 40 years combined experience in the hospitality business to insure your trip meets or exceeds your expectations.

The professionalism exhibited at dockside each morning defines organization as ten neatly uniformed guides emerge from the transportation ferry and enthusiastically converge on their skiffs with guest lunch boxes, rods, tackle, hand-held radio and a big smile. As a beginner or veteran bonefisher, your greatest asset is your guide, and the native guides at Deep Water Cay are the best in the business at fulfilling your fishing expectations. Some of the guides have been with the club over 20 years. The Guides are very personable and will go out of their way to teach and encourage anglers in any way possible. They have an uncanny ability to spot fish under the worst conditions and pole the skiff into a perfect casting position within seconds.

With over 250 square miles of flats between Grand Bahama and Abaco Island, it is home to many double digit bonefish and a tremendous population of four to eight pound bones. To chase the bonefish the club maintains a fleet of eleven specially designed Dolphin Super Skiffs, and there is a full-time mechanic on duty seven days a week to ensure that every boat is in top mechanical condition. Anglers go to Deep Water Cay for the bonefish, however, other species like barracuda, jacks, sharks and permit also inhabit these same waters and add a great variety to your trip.

Each evening brings the anglers to the Blue Hole Bar for the nightly exchange of fish tales and excitement for the next day angling. The elegant candle-light dinners are hosted (often by Paul and Alison Adams) in a congenial family atmosphere at a lively table complete with fresh Bahamian Androsia linen and a beautiful floral center-piece. The cuisine consists of fresh seafood grouper, snapper. lobster and that all-time favorite, conch. In addition to superb seafood, traditional fare like roast rack of lamb with crusty rosemary potatoes is served.
Deep Water Cay Club is the oldest and most exclusive bonefish destination in the world and is indeed a special place. A quiet remote getaway, rope hammocks gently swaying among the seagrapes, white sandy beaches, swimming pool, snorkeling Thrift Harbor, and Booktraders Paperback Library all offer diversions for the non-fishing companion.

Deep Water Cay offers packages of three, four and seven nights operating mid-September through June. Getting there is very easy with charters from Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, landing at the lodge’s 3200 ft hard-pan private air strip in the middle of a bonefish paradise.

Trophy moose, black bear and white tailed deer are abundant throughout the thousands of square miles (yes that’s thousands) of crown managed forests accessible from our lodge.

Located at the junction of the historic Ottawa and Mattawa rivers the lodge offers the unique opportunity to fish and hunt in two Canadian provinces. This means twice the territory, expanded seasons and greater variety of species. For example Quebec allows a moose to be taken by bow during bow season and by rifle during rifle season. Ontario on the other hand has regulations for deer hunting much less stringent than Quebec. Our experienced management and guides will design annual hunts to ensure the best opportunities for each species in each province.

Small game and waterfowl hunting are great ways to spend some time after you’ve taken your big game animal. When you want to fish for fun you can catch Walleye, Northern Pike, Large and Small Mouth Bass, Muskie, Whitefish and Sturgeon off the dock. When you want to get serious we’ll take you into the ZEC MAGANASIPI. Just across the river, this three hundred square mile preserve offers three hundred and seven lakes. Rainbow trout, Lake Trout, Brook Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Lake Char, Splake and Sauger along with the others mentioned above can be caught in record numbers and trophy sizes. Just a forty five minute drive from the club (paved road) puts you in ALGONQUIN PARK. Four thousand and eight hundred square miles of protected wilderness, a thousand miles of inter connected canoe routes and lakes, fishing and wild life viewing without equal in North America.

Sound like your in the middle of nowhere?

The Mattawa Gaming Club is located just four miles from the village of Mattawa, Ontario. Less than three hundred miles from Buffalo NY or five hundred miles from Clevland Ohio.

Mattawa and area is a snowmobilers paradise. Ontario offers excellent snow conditions and the largest groomed trail system in the world, twenty two thousand miles. To access this system from the club just turn on your machine and go. Or go wild! We’ll take you across the river and into the Laurentian mountains, country so remote and breathtakingly beautiful you’ll remember it forever. Deep powder, 50 degree hill climbs and lakes not accessible in summer provide trophy ice fishing that combine to make these trips world class adventures.

Or how about a little boat ride?

Say two hundred miles along the Lake Temiskaming /Ottawa River Waterway. Accommodating boats up to thirty feet in length the route is a historical and cultural treasure. First used as the main exploration route to the west, then as a major fur trade route in Canada and then for the massive logging drives of the eighteen hundreds the waterway offers the opportunity to revisit our past and learn of the three cultures (Native, Quebecois, and English) that came together to open up this massive wilderness. Visit historic sites and museums, watch Golden Eagles soar and dive for fish to feed their young, camp on pristine beaches and fall asleep to the sound of loons, unconcerned with your presence.

But what about the club?
The club is dedicated to avid sportsmen and comes fully equipped to help ensure your fishing and hunting success. Members have use of one of three fully furnished lodges. Boats and motors are supplied as are two A.T.V.s to get you to your hunting grounds. Two camping trailers are provided for use during extended hunts. Block and tackle assemblies for game removal and cleaning are also provided. Fish cleaning stations and big game cleaning quarters are on site as are minnow tanks, freezing facilities and on site fuel pumps for your convenience. The club has a total of twenty seven boat and float plane slips for those members wishing to bring their own craft. Year round storage is available and on site management provides security. A full range of guiding and outfitting services are provided to ensure you bring home what you came for. It’s a small private club in a big big land. A total of only eighteen members are allowed to bring up to three guests each time they visit.

Our experienced hospitality management team is on site year round to coordinate bookings and ensure your satisfaction. Individual members have an opportunity to put forth changes to the clubs rules and regulations on an annual basis and such changes will be voted on by the membership. Memberships are legally transferred by way of a ninety nine year lease registered in the Ontario Land Transfer Registry. Memberships are fully assignable and may be transferred, willed or resold at any time. Our American members can take advantage of current monetary exchange rates that reduce membership costs by approximately thirty five percent. For less than the cost of a new bass boat, you, your children and your children’s children can secure your place in the finest wilderness area in the east.

If you are looking for unforgettable adventure, trophy big game hunting, world class fishing and a place in God’s Country call today for more information.

Equipment you should bring:

Bring your own fishing gear! It’s always better fishing when you use tackle you are familiar with.

Warm clothing is a must (snow flurries can occur at any time), hat, gloves, rain gear, hip boots, sleeping bag, back pack, camera, film, toiletries, special medications, and firearms (if preferred).

Nice to have items, such as, plenty of dry socks, mosquito repellent, sun glasses (polarized), extra hiking boots, pillow, any alchoholic beverages you may favor, Ben-Gay, maybe even a good cigar!

Remember, we don’t promise you many modern conveniences,

We have seen the need for an “off the beaten path” fishing camp designed for people that want to get out and experience the real Alaska and that love fishing! We go back in to the mountain lakes and streams that the normal “highway tourist” only hears about. Our goal is to offer more individual attention and to cause less environmental impact by llmiting the number of guests we take out to a maximum of 4 at a time. We do mostly fly fishing and ultra-light spin fishing for the “big ones” up in the headwaters. Each trip is taylored to what you want to do and the type of fishing you like. We have literally hundreds of lakes and streams in the area to choose from. And this may not be like any other trip you have been on as I consider it unusual to see other people at any of the places we go in to! One word of caution; make your reservations early due to the limited number of people we schedule! Be one of only a few!
